objectives

Reading: SEP 09 2010
Course: PSYC364

Read Old Woman pgs. 43-65.

* understand how the Little Albert study was intended as a direct demonstration of Watson's radical behaviorism
* understand Watson's attitude to the nature-nurture controversy, and his explanation of complex behaviors
* describe what Guthrie is proposing in his law of on-shot learning. Pay attention to the word TEND. note that the issue for Guthrie is the wide variety of combinations of stimuli that occur in the world.
* understand what conditions lead to an increased likelihood that a behavior will occur in a variety of situations, and which will lead to a decrease. I'll ask about both in class, even though I don't have room for questions about both here.

preparation

1

How much of the reading for the upcoming class have you completed?

All reading completed.
Some reading completed.
No reading completed.

2

How prepared for the class do you think you are? (Being prepared means that you understand what you have read, and feel ready to ask questions and participate in class discussion.

Completely prepared.
Mostly prepared.
About halfway prepared.
A little bit prepared.
Not at all prepared.

3

What question would you like to ask about the material you read? (I might not be able to answer each of these specifically, but I'll try to address some of these in class.)

Q1

A

How did the Little Albert demonstration provide evidence for transfer of conditioning?

B

For Watson and Guthrie, how do complex behaviors arise?

Q2

A

According to Guthrie's law of one-shot learning, why DON'T people always respond in the same way to the same stimulus?

B

Suppose that a child does not like vegetables, and throws them at the wall instead of eating them. You decide to train the child to eat the vegetables using Guthrie's law of one-shot learning (good for you!). You do this by starting the child out with a single piece of carrot at a meal, and slowly increasing the amount of vegetables that appear on the plate. What technique for breaking habits are you using?
